Waste Reduction Management
In 2019, we revised our Environmental Policy to stipulate our commitment to “promote environmentally conscious management in order to realize a sustainable society that achieves a harmonious balance between the environment and the economy.” Furthermore, we established a new corporate vision and Long-term Management Plan in 2021, in which we set the reduction of the environmental impact of waste as a priority issue, and placed zero waste as one of our three deliverable values. To achieve this goal, we are strengthening our efforts even more, including reviewing our management structure and enhancing our information disclosure.
For the decision-making process, the Central Environment Committee, chaired by the Representative Director/ Vice President, is held twice a year to discuss company-wide policies and measures related to waste.
The Representative Director/ Vice President receives quarterly reports on waste from the Safety & Environment Division, which acts as the Secretariat for the Central Environment Committee.
Since going through the decision-making process given above, the Company has been promoting the use of precast members and construction units for new construction projects and new building constructions in order to reduce, reuse or recycle all our waste, with the goal of achieving a final disposal rate of 3% or less by FY2030 and zero by FY2050. To that end, we set waste reduction as a company-wide environmental goal, created target values for each field as well as for each branch office, and monitor and assess them on a quarterly basis.
For monitoring and assessment, the digital manifest data and other input data of each project (such as paper-based manifests and items used under the National Permit System) are integrated into our customized Environmental Management System. This system is used by our head office and branch office system administrators to monitor the status of our waste byproducts.
The waste generation status of each project is viewed and continuously monitored for abnormal waste generation by the main manager of the head office and branch offices. In addition, we share information internally and created a system to promptly take the necessary action to control the amount of waste we generate and manage recycling rates.
Waste and Significant Waste-Related Impacts
The flowchart below shows the volume of resources related to our business activities and their environmental impacts.
With zero waste as our goal, we are working throughout the company to achieve a final disposal rate of 3% by 2030 and zero waste by 2050.
Initiatives to Reduce Waste
We implement the following initiatives to reduce waste on an ongoing basis.
Waste Management Training
· Employee training is conducted at an intermediate treatment facility to promote interest in waste reduction and sorting among employees.
· The company has prepared a “Construction Byproduct Management Manual” that includes explanations of important environmental laws and regulations, as well as details about the company’s decision-making criteria and procedures regarding the management of construction byproducts. The manual is used as a basis for training.
Promotion of waste sorting
・Industrial waste sorting lessons are conducted at industrial waste sorting yards as needed.
・Direct instructions on industrial waste sorting are also implemented at work sites.
Through such measures, we promote waste sorting and reduction of waste generated as well as working to improve recycling rates and reduce the final disposal of waste.
Initiatives related to waste plastics
For waste plastics, the Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics came into effect on April 2022. Businesses that generate waste plastics are required to reduce waste plastics and promote recycling.
We installed waste plastic compressors at work sites to reduce their volume for reducing CO2 emissions during transportation. Also, we sort the waste plastics into PVC pipes and other waste plastics before transporting them to promote material recycling of PVC pipes and other recycling efforts.
